Maths Programme - Nagu Nagutha Ganitha
Many studies and assessments related to schools reveal that there is a gap between school text book content and
actual learning that happens in class rooms. There is a definite need for an intervention in a subject like
mathematics which most children find difficult, resulting in poor learning outcomes.
As a step towards alleviating this gap and making maths easy, Pratham Mysore has initiated the
Nagu Nagutha Ganitha (NNG) - Fun with Maths programme along with the assistance of the State School
System. This is a package developed by Dr. T. Padmini, Trustee of Pratham Mysore, for fostering and improving
basic arithmetic and mathematical skills among primary school goers and special group of children with visual and
hearing impairment. The NNG model is implemented with a creative kit having a collection of a number of materials
promoting a child's mental ability in developing skills in numeracy.

This sixty days maths programme is a remedial package. It marks a significant shift from
conventional teaching methods towards a child-led model of learning which focuses on fostering thinking
strategies among children so that they explore different ways of arriving at mathematical solutions.
The government has perceived this experiment as an amazing success with children jumping from 7%
(20th day exposure) to 90% (60th day exposure).
